ABOUT "KOSA"

About Kosa image1

Kosa-machi in Kumamoto Prefecture is located in the heart of Kyushu.

The region was once plagued by frequent river floods, making agriculture difficult.
In response, Kiyomasa Kato, the lord of Kumamoto Castle, visited the area in 1608.
He undertook river improvements, including the construction of agricultural waterways, to prevent flooding.
Thanks to his flood control projects, water spread throughout the Kosa Basin.
This led to agricultural development and prosperity for Kosa-machi as a proper town.

Even today, the Midorigawa River flows through the town center.
It bustles with ayu fishing in summer.
The waterways visible from the inn's veranda are remnants of Kiyomasa's construction.
“Sosui” refers to the creation of waterways by reclaiming land to irrigate and facilitate boat transportation.

The name “NIPPONIA Kosa Sosuinosato” reflects the town's history, born and lived alongside water, and also symbolizing the accumulation of new history here while respecting the town's past.
